About the Fellowship

In 2017, a joint clinic in facial clefts was established by Dr. Philip Kuo-Ting Chen and Dr. Tung-Yao Chang at Taiji Clinic. By integrating the pairs’ expertise in prenatal ultrasound and postnatal facial cleft surgeries, the clinic is able to provide early detection and subsequent counseling during the pregnancy, helping families process and make informed decisions.

After four years of collaboration between the prenatal ultrasound team at Taiji Clinic and the craniofacial team at Taipei Medical University Hospital, the joint clinic, with the help of the Taiwan Institute of Fetal Medicine, established this international fellowship for facial cleft treatment.

The fellowship will train surgeons in the prenatal diagnosis and surgical repair of facial clefts. Surgeons will also learn to communicate better with fetal medicine specialists, provide prenatal counseling to parents, and develop long term relationships with parents post pregnancy.

The fellowship will be launched in July 2022. Applications are accepted until April 30, 2022, with admissions announced on May 9, 2022. Scholarships will be provided for those from the Czech Republic, Japan, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, and the United States, as our token of appreciation for these countries’ vaccine donations during the COVID-19 pandemic.

About the Taiwan-Thank-You Scholarship

December 16, 2021

To whom it may concern,

To repay the vaccine donation from Czech, Japan, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, and the USA (in alphabetic order) during the pandemic, the Taiwan Institute of Fetal Medicine would like to offer a scholarship to doctors from the above countries to have a 6 month fellowship in Taiwan to learn from prenatal diagnosis to postnatal surgical repair of facial clefts.

The Taiwan Institute of Fetal Medicine, founded in 2019,  is a registered nonprofit organization (1080280906) in Taiwan, aiming at promoting fetal medicine. The vaccine donation from the above countries contributed a lot to the health of Taiwan people. We decided to repay the above countries with a fellowship program for facial clefts.

The Taiji Clinic, founded in 2008, is a leading clinic in fetal ultrasound in Taiwan. The Facial Cleft Center, founded in 2017, in the Taipei Medical University Hospital is the third and the newest center for facial cleft treatment in Taiwan, and it serves about 40-50% of the new cases in Taiwan. The two teams have been collaborating since 2017 by organizing a special joint clinic of facial clefts, in which at the same time when the fetal medicine specialist scans the pregnant woman, the plastic surgeon also attends the scan, counsels the parents based on the detailed ultrasound findings, and gives an individualized postnatal surgical plan up to 18 years of age to the parents. The experiences of the joint clinic has been published in the medical journal(#). In short, the parents elected to attend the joint clinic have a much higher chance (85%) to continue pregnancy.

Dr. Philip Kuo-Ting Chen and I will be in charge of the fellowship program. Dr. Chen has rich experiences in teaching international fellows to perform surgical repairs of facial clefts, and my staff and I will teach the fellows ultrasound skills to diagnose facial clefts prenatally. Combining prenatal ultrasound and postnatal surgical repair of facial clefts makes this fellowship program unique and comprehensive. After finishing the 6 month fellowship, the fellows can organize a similar team in their home country and we are happy to provide further support and experiences remotely.

We appreciate the vaccine donation from the above countries very much, and we would like to strengthen our friendship with our fellowship program and scholarship. Please refer to the attached application form and our official webpage for more information.

Sincerely yours,

Tung-yao Chang, MD, M. Med. Sci.

Fetal cleft lip and palate workshops

After prenatal diagnosis of facial clefts, the parents are invited to attend a support workshop to learn how to feed the baby with 3D phantoms of facial clefts.

Dr. Philip Kuo-Ting Chen, the pediatric nurse, the case manager, and experienced volunteer workers will guide the parents to be confident in feeding the baby.

A short video describing the support workshop for facial clefts.

In addition to the parents, the workshop is also open to medical professionals, like the nursing staff working in newborn centers, so that they are well trained before the babies of facial clefts are born.
