因適合胎兒治療的個案不多，經驗的累積非常困難，必須群策群力，通力合作，才能讓胎兒治療更進步。

因此，我們決定走上國際，讓大家一起參與。

我們首先邀請 FMF Japan 加入台兒和台大共同主辦第5次的胎兒治療論壇，在此也邀請有興趣的同業們一同參加，進行交流。

About “Why” for the Fetal Therapy Forum

I am Dr. Tungyao Chang, a dreamer and doer in fetal medicine. In 1998, I was doing a master course in obstetric ultrasound in Nottingham, UK and had an opportunity to visit the Harris Birthright Fetal Medicine Centre, King’s College London near Christmas. For the first time in my life, I witnessed how Prof. Kypros Nicolaides successfully did a fetal therapy with laser on twin twin transfusion syndrome, at a time when we still generally believed that there was no treatment other than amniodrainage.

It was so eye-opening. I told myself that I also wanted to do this. After returning to Taiwan, I did two years’ fellowship in high risk pregnancy, made every effort to learn fetal medicine, and started a special unit called the Pregnancy Assessment Center in the Taipei Mackay Memorial Hospital in 2001, in charge of specialist fetal ultrasound and fetal therapy. I did perform fetal therapy in quite a few cases, and was happy with my career when still in the medical center, but I never made it to laser therapy on twin twin transfusion syndrome before I decided to leave in 2008.

In 2008, I founded the Taiji Clinic. It was the first specialist fetal medicine clinic in Taiwan aiming at providing the highest quality fetal ultrasound for our local population. After 17 years, we have grown into five branches and are widely accepted as a leading team in Taiwan.

After so many years, the memory of my first time seeing laser therapy for twin twin transfusion syndrome remained vivid in my mind. In 2024, I started the fetal therapy forum with Dr. Jessica Kang and Dr. Wenwei Hsu from the fetal therapy team of the National Taiwan University Hospital as an online meeting every quarter in Taiwan, inviting doctors doing fetal therapy to share experiences. In 2025, Dr. Nobuhiko Hayashi in Japan started to co-host the forum with us as we share the same vision that “fetal therapy is rare and precious; every fetal therapy is heroic and worth sharing”.

I wish the presentations in the fetal therapy forum can be inspiring and encouraging, as they are all about saving life before birth stories, with which we carry on with our career in fetal medicine.
